Amy Spiezio is a "doer." Whether it's chasing down a story for Eyecare Business magazine, or securing a location for the Optical Women's Association's annual Pleiades event in New York, you can count on Amy Spiezio to get the job done. So it comes as no surprise to those who know her that she would be selected as the 2015 PYXIS honoree. PYXIS is a constellation in the southern sky known as "The Compass" and, like a compass, the PYXIS Award honoree helps guide the organization by her leadership example.
"Amy was actually the board member who came up with the name of this award back in 2010 when it was first awarded to Lorinda Fraboni of Walman Optical. The idea behind the award was to honor someone who worked tirelessly behind the scenes promoting the OWA," said Christie Walker, OWA president. "It seems fitting that the creator of the award should now be our honoree, as Amy's work is the epitome of what it means to lead by example; and what a great example she is!"
Spiezio is the executive editor of Eyecare Business magazine and has been with the publication for 13 years. When not optically occupied, Amy lives in Pennsylvania and enjoys her pets, her friends, and her wonderful family.
"I am so pleased, honored and surprised to be named the Pyxis Award recipient," said Spiezio. "This award is near and dear to my heart. From its inception, it was designed to recognize people who help the Optical Women's Association grow and flourish."
As an active member of the OWA, Spiezio is definitely one of those people who have helped the organization grow and flourish. Spiezio has served on the OWA board for nine years, acting as the secretary/treasurer for several terms. Her tenure in the organization has included involvement on many committees, particularly communications, mentoring, and the programs committee where she has made many great friends. One of her key roles has been working with Marchon to secure locations for the annual Pleiades event.
"It has always been my hope for this group, and the goal of our collective efforts — to grow and flourish as an organization, as members, and as successful professional women. I couldn't be more proud to be able to say I've been part of this wonderful association's vibrant, exciting development, and hope to continue this worthwhile work into the future," said Spiezio.
The PYXIS Award is presented to a member of the OWA who actively participates in the organization and promotes the OWA throughout the optical industry, contributing to the OWA's continuing growth. The recipient of the PYXIS Award is exceptional in her commitment to support and develop the OWA. She helps to guide the direction of the organization with her actions, and inspires by her leadership. Past Pyxis Honorees have included: Tiara Claxton (Safilo) in 2013 and Lorinda Fraboni (Walman Optical) in 2010.
