Welcome to the OWA's "Travel Like a Local" series, brought to you by the International Expansion Committee, where we share a little bit about the places in the world we call home. Here, we reveal our top tips for truly immersing yourself and experiencing our cities beyond the top landmarks. Whether you're traveling for work or taking a well-deserved vacation, we hope you find this series useful as you plan your visit. In this month's edition, I'm excited to show you my town and how to experience Belluno, Italy, like a local.

Having spent years traveling across Europe for optical industry events and exhibitions, from MIDO in Milan to regional trade meetings, I’ve come to appreciate the unique role Belluno plays in our field. The city is home to several well-known eyewear manufacturers and lens laboratories, making it an important hub in Italy’s optical supply chain. Whether visiting to meet suppliers, attend workshops, or explore potential collaborations, Belluno offers a mix of professional opportunity and authentic Italian charm.

Nestled at the foothills of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Belluno also provides a gateway to some of Italy’s most breathtaking mountain landscapes. For those who like to combine business with adventure, the surrounding Dolomites offer hiking, cycling, and skiing opportunities, making it easy to explore the natural beauty of the region before or after work commitments.

Additionally, Belluno is just a short drive from the Prosecco wine region, offering the chance to explore rolling vineyards and taste some of Italy’s finest sparkling wines.

Getting Around Like a Local

Renting a car is recommended as it provides flexibility to explore the Dolomite valleys, quaint mountain villages, and local wineries.   Belluno’s surroundings are ideal for cycling enthusiasts. You can rent a bike and take scenic routes along the Piave River or into the foothills of the Dolomites. eBikes are also available for those who want to explore effortlessly while taking in the UNESCO-protected landscapes.

Dining Like a Local

Belluno blends traditional Venetian cuisine with hearty mountain flavours. Whether you’re grabbing a quick espresso after visiting a local optical store or enjoying a celebratory dinner with colleagues, there’s something for every palate.

Markets: Start at the Mercato Coperto di Belluno, where fresh produce, cheeses, and cured meats showcase the region’s culinary traditions. The Saturday market is perfect for a quick snack or for discovering local specialties to take home.

Local Cuisine: Our traditional foods include Casunziei (a type of ravioli), Pastin (a ground meat mixture), and various dishes featuring polenta and local mushrooms.

Three Must-Visit Neighborhoods

Centro Storico (Historic Center): Belluno’s old town is full of narrow streets, elegant palaces, and hidden squares. Key landmarks include Piazza dei Martiri and the Cathedral of San Martino.

Prosecco Region: For those who enjoy wine culture, a trip to the nearby Prosecco hills is a must. Rolling vineyards, charming wine estates, and tastings of Italy’s famous sparkling wine provide a relaxing and indulgent escape.

Cortina & the Dolomites: Just a short drive from the city, the Dolomite villages such as Cortina (host of 2026 Winter Olympics) offer hiking trails, stunning views, and authentic local experiences.

For those attending optical industry events, it’s an ideal way to unwind while taking in UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Final Thoughts

Belluno is a hidden gem that combines optical industry relevance, historic charm, and natural beauty. From exploring its historic streets to venturing into the Dolomites, there’s always something to discover. Whether it’s enjoying a local meal, cycling along the Piave, or connecting with industry peers, Belluno offers a uniquely authentic Italian experience.

For fellow optical professionals planning a trip, I hope these tips help you make the most of your visit to Belluno. There’s a perfect balance here between business opportunities and memorable local experiences—truly a place to travel like a local.
