Connection Series - Connie Mariano

The Optical Women's Association Connection Series will feature author and speaker Dr. Connie Mariano on Thursday, September 23, from noon to 1:30 pm at the Las Vegas Venetian, Titian Rm 2302 and via streaming on Facebook Live.

Dr. Mariano is used to breaking barriers. She is the first woman to be White House Physician to three American presidents, the first female Director of the White House Medical Unit, and the first Filipino American to become a Navy Rear Admiral.

Born in the Philippines, her father a Navy steward and her mother a dentist, Dr. Mariano lived the life of a family in the American armed forces. A career Naval Officer and board-certified specialist in internal medicine, Dr. Mariano's career has taken her around the globe — aboard Navy ships and Air Force One. After leaving the White House in 2001, Dr. Mariano became a consultant to the Executive Health Program at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale where she now has a private medical practice.

Five fun facts about Dr. Mariano:

  1. Lesson to live by — embrace your true authentic self and don't be afraid of failure
  2. Most embarrassing moment — flooding the ship's toilet on the King of Spain Juan Carlos' royal yacht (you can read about it in the book)
  3. First job — a part-time summer job as a GS-3 civil service clerk typist at Amphibious Base Coronado
  4. Biggest misconception — that I don't have enough time for other people
  5. Most cherished childhood memory — my mother cooking Filipino food in our kitchen

After the event, Dr. Mariano will be signing copies of her book, The White House Doctor, one of OWA's 2021 member book selections.

Registration for the event is now closed, but some onsite registrations may be accommodated if space permits.
