From Living Room to Boardroom

The March OWA Reads book selection was From Living Room to Boardroom: How I Launched and Sold a Multi-Million Dollar Business by Corinne McCormack. A long-time OWA member and past president, McCormack joined the discussion, providing additional tips and resources to help current OWA members further their career paths.

In particular, McCormack talked about the importance of being active in professional associations to help provide connection and networking opportunities with other women. When you are helping and supporting others, you tend to be more fulfilled in both your career and your life.

McCormack wrote this book to inspire other women entrepreneurs to persevere through the ups and downs of their endeavors and use their passion to give them the confidence needed to succeed. Even within a corporate environment, you can be entrepreneurial by looking for ways to overcome challenges while creating solutions to problems. People can be successful in every economy by living in the present moment and focusing on what needs to be done to allow you to be more efficient.

The book provided Eight Entrepreneurial Essentials which McCormack believes are critical to career success. Which essentials should you spend more time focusing on?

  1. Passion — the most significant essential that helps you stand out from the competition
  2. Drive — what keeps you going when others are naysayers
  3. Self-Sufficiency — the will to make decisions and handle things for yourself instead of depending on someone else to do it for you
  4. Inquisitiveness — being open to new ideas and constantly seeking to grow
  5. Communicator — eloquently conveying or exchanging information and ideas with others
  6. Leadership — being able to guide a group of people with honesty, focus, persuasiveness, and the ability to command respect
  7. Vision — being able to imagine future events, conditions, and developments
  8. Decisiveness — being able to make decisions quickly and effectively, and moving on once you have made a decision

In the book, McCormack shared a gift from her husband, a poem written by Walter D. Wintle, that helped her during challenging times:

If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win, but think you can't,
It's almost a cinch you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost.
For out in the world, we find
Success begins with a fellow's will,
It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you're outclassed, you are.
You've got to think high to rise;
You've got to be sure of yourself before
You ever can win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man;
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the one who thinks he can.

Ready for the Next OWA Reads? The June OWA Reads gathering will look at the book Seven More Days: Live a Life That's Bursting with Positivity and Happiness ... Before It's Too Late, written by Amy N. Dix.

If you haven't joined an OWA Reads discussion yet this is the book to get you started, and if you're a regular OWA Reads participant you will love this book! This is not your ordinary motivational book — it has everything! Often, I pick up a good life coaching book and it is just that, coaching. Sometimes I have a hard time getting drawn into the book itself and it ends up in the pile on my nightstand. You too? Not with this one! You will hear of great life experiences, great life coaching, and the science behind it all.

The author Amy Dix is an international speaker, two-time No.1 international best-selling author, and Positive Psychology Practitioner. She breaks down in a clear way how to eliminate toxic energy in your life by using her own life experiences. Once you have read the book, keep thinking about how you can apply it to your own life. Come share your thoughts and ideas on the book or your path to positivity and happiness with us at the next OWA Reads meeting!
