Every year, 23 Colleges of Optometry in the United States graduate new practitioners ready to go into the workforce as optometrists after four years of rigorous learning, national exams, and licensing requirements. And, today, nearly three-quarters of incoming optometry students are female.
Are these new optometrists also prepared for the business challenges ahead? How can a new O.D. develop the business acumen to become a successful professional?
"Business acumen" is defined as the understanding of important business measures to help make good decisions, see the big picture but not lose sight of the details, and deliver clear and measurable results.
Below are three strategies NECO shares with new optometrists to help them plan their strategy for developing and growing their business acumen. Your personalized strategy for the development of business acumen will vary based on the role and organizations in which you lead.
As leaders in the optometric field, we have the power to excel and create continued success in our profession!
