(Committee Spotlight)

This article is the first in a new series designed to spotlight each of the very important committees that make the OWA the great organization it is.

The committee chosen for this spotlight is the Membership Committee. To learn a little more about this committee, I spoke with the committee chair, Jean Sabre of Uptown Vision. When asked about what inspires her within the OWA, she states "Amazing women and their stories that are shared through the OWA events and newsletters."

The main goal of the Membership Committee is to work with current members and contacts to invite new women to join and participate. However, this is just a small part of their task. Once someone becomes a new member, the committee also follows up a Welcome letter and information on how to become involved. Each member of the committee invites new members to contact them with any questions and encourages them to be active in the OWA through the networking events, or volunteering in a committee.

This committee is also in charge of recognizing new members at each OWA event. Note several of the committee members holding the beautiful white roses for new members attending the OWA Star Award Ceremony on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at One World Observatory in New York City during Vision Expo East.

One of the committee's current goals is to further engage the younger generation (millennials), realizing that to sustain this wonderful organization we need to engage with all ages and background experiences. To help with that goal, the committee is launching a new campaign called the Power of One.

The Power of One is simple, but quite powerful. Each member is being asked to invite ONE woman in optical to join the OWA before Vision Expo West. Imagine all the new faces we could see at the OWA events during Vision Expo West! I hope Las Vegas has plenty of white roses because we know that our membership can do just about anything.
