So I'm reading one of the OWA book choices, Sticking Points: How to Get 4 Generations Working Together in the 12 Places They Come Apart, in preparation for our Connection Series event at Vision Expo West. I'm having this powerful sense of déjà vu from when I read a different book, years ago, that shed light on how men and women think differently. Do you remember reading, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, and having this aha moment of, "So that's what HE means, and that's why HE does that thing!"? I really wished I'd had that book before my first marriage disintegrated. It might have helped . . . or maybe not. Now with this new book, I'm getting into the minds of four generations and having that same aha moment. "So that is why my parents and children act the way they do!"

In the book, the author says, "Think of each generation as coming from a different country with a different history, language, culture, clothing and traditions." If you were doing business with someone from Germany or Japan, you would spend some time learning the do's and don'ts for doing business in that country. Generations are no different. There are do's and don'ts for working with and selling to the different generations, too. I'm finding it fascinating getting into the minds of the other three generations that surround my own generation — the Baby Boomers. (Of course, when I read what the Boomers are thinking, I'm nodding in agreement, "Well naturally THAT'S right.")

Whether you choose this book or another as your OWA member benefit book selection, I hope you'll join us for the Connection Series event at Vision Expo West, where we will be exploring four generations working together. We've enlisted the help of one of our millennial members to create the program, since obviously I don't speak that language . . . but I'm learning. Stay tuned for more details.

Keeping it short and simple,

Christie Walker

Member Benefit: Book Selection
Christie Walker, OWA President
Each year, it's the job of the OWA president to select the book or books for the member benefit. This year there were so many excellent choices that it was pretty difficult to come up with only three. So to make my job easier, I looked for books that would tie in with themes we explored at the Champagne Breakfast event at Vision Expo East, and would be the theme book for our Connection Series event at Vision Expo West. Check out these three books and then make your selection. You will be able to pick the book format — digital or print. Your book will arrive in time for a summer read.
