Today's competitive landscape and cultural changes, brought by Millennials entering the workforce, have forced leaders to adapt and manage differently. We see upper echelon leaders using emotional intelligence techniques on a day-to-day basis that separate great companies from good ones. These techniques can even change professional careers and personal relationships forever.

If you want to step ahead of the pack and bring your social skills to new heights, you will want to incorporate these four very important characteristics into your day-to-day activities. It will change your life!

The key skills for building your EQ and improving your ability to manage emotions and connect with others are:

1. Self-Awareness

People with strong self-awareness build time for reflection and routinely collect specific feedback from people who will be honest and whose ideas they value. A study found that leaders who sought out negative feedback were much more self-aware and effective than those who sought out positive feedback. Be brave enough to lean into your discomfort.

2. Self-Management

People with self-management skills are able to control impulsive feelings and behaviors, manage emotions in healthy ways, take initiative, follow through on commitments, and adapt to changing circumstances.

3. Social Awareness

People who are socially aware understand the emotions, needs, and concerns of other people, pick up on emotional cues, feel comfortable socially, and recognize the power dynamics in a group or organization. Social awareness is looking outward to learn about and appreciate others.

4. Relationship Management

People with this characteristic know how to develop and maintain good relationships; communicate clearly; actively listen, inspire, and influence others; work well in a team; and manage conflict. They are seen as likeable and able to work well with diverse groups, even in the face of stress and conflict. It's not about you; it's all about them!

I sincerely hope that you will join us on Thursday, September 14, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Vision Expo West to capture the experts' view — from a very talented panel — of how EQ can change your life. It is truly amazing how social skills play such an important part in the journey of your career and personal life.

By far, this is my favorite business read of all time.
